History of ASI (Bihar)

Our History

Until 1978 there used to be an active Patna Chapter only. Prof. R.N. Thakur & Dr. Birendra Kishore mooted the idea to form Bihar Chapter of ASI to interact with the surgical fraternity as they were feeling marooned at Muzaffarpur.

Luckily their idea was well received by the surgeons of Patna, Darbhanga, Ranchi. As requested Prof. U N Shahi called a formal meeting at his place to discuss the proposal in late August/79. The meeting was attended by 14 Surgeons of Patna and Prof. R.N.Thakur, Dr. Jyotindra Sahay, Dr. K.K.P. Singh & Dr. Birendra Kishore from Muzaffarpur. It was unanimously decided to form Bihar chapter of ASI and one ad hoc committee was formed – Prof. U.N. Shahi-President, Prof R.N. Thakur – Secretary, Dr. Birendra Kishore – Treasurer along with one member from each Medical College of Bihar as members of the executive committee. First Conference BASICON was held on the last Saturday and Sunday of 1979 at S.K. Medical College, Muzaffarpur. Dr. Ramakrishnan, President ASI was the Chief Guest and Dr KC Mahajan, N.Delhi was the guest of honour. The conference was attended by 87 Surgeons of Bihar and every one was very appreciative of the endeavour. Ad hoc committee was formerly elected to guide and shape the chapter.

First ASICON was held at Patna in 1948 followed by 1981. In the year 2001 after a gap of 20 years we held memorable millennium ASICON at Patna and in last decade we have given three National Presidents of ASI. Dr. Ram Saran Sinha, Dr. A.A Hai and Dr B.K. Sinha. Earlier we had two of our esteemed members rising to the post of President ASI. Dr B. Mukhopadhya 1970 and DR R.N.Sinha in 1974. We all are aiming high and are actively perusing it too.
